Shortly after arriving, Debra became embroiled in contract termination of eight professors that the president had mandated as part of the administration’s accreditation plan for the unit. ‘‘There were goals for the SBI to become accredited. The faculty and administration had been working on it for some time.
I learned to stretch my vision beyond my grasp—to do more than I thought I could. The nuns were supportive of my talents and intelligence. ‘‘They were certainly in cahoots with our parents. ’’ Lois laughs, ‘‘Did anybody ask Lois? ’ So, when I was told that I had to play a violin, I did it. We also had a piano. My great aunt played, my mother played, and I played. My friend Anita and I sang at my mother’s club meetings. I have sung all my life in many choirs. ’’ Lois was a good student and valedictorian of her class of 28 students.
So we looked for strategies aimed at those participants who could not ﬁnd work and were hard to place. We recruited, trained, and deployed 50 TANF participants to survey over four thousand households, going door to door in the communities where they lived.
